Ethridge/Etheridge Family Reunion

Saturday, June 4, 2011
11 am - 3 pm CDT
in the old Frink School Gymnasium building
at the at the Community Center in Kinard, Calhoun County, Florida. CST at the Kinard Park Public Library, 5416 SW SR 73, Kinard, Calhoun County, Florida. (The Kinard Park Public Library is the old school.) Any and all Ethridge/Etheridge descendants, extended family and friends are encouraged to attend and bring pictures, stories and a covered dish of their favorite recipe.

This line originated with Samuel Ethridge (ca.1816-ca.1885), who was originally from North Carolina. Samuel is first found in the 1850 US Census for Decatur County, Georgia, with his second wife, Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge (ca.1819-ca.1863), whom he married in 1850. In 1860 he was living in Jackson County, Florida and by 1870 he had moved into Calhoun County. When he married Sarah he already had children James (ca.1838), Arlenas (ca.1839), Ann (ca.1843), Martha (1845-1914), and Nancy (ca.1847) by deceased Lucinda Grantham. All were born in Georgia. Sarah had a daughter, Susan (1837), by her first husband, Richard Goodwin. There was also a son, John, but we are unsure of whether he was Samuel's or Sarah's. Samuel's first wife is unknown.

Samuel and Sarah had three children together. Their names were Enoch (1851-1894), Frances Lucinda (1855-ca.1910) and Isaac Samuel (1858-1905. Sarah died sometime in the early 1860's and Samuel married Sarah Ann Scott in 1863. She died sometime before 1870, exact date unknown at this time.

Not much is known about Samuel and Lucinda Grantham's children James, Arlenas, Ann and Nancy. Their daughter, Martha, married William Henry Beck and lived out her life in Calhoun County, Florida. Her children were Elizabeth (ca.1869); Nancy (1872-1952) married William Mann/Manning; Hennie (ca.1874); Jesse (ca.1878) married Mary Ramsey, Tinetha Holland and Mamie Pilgrim; Kizzie (ca.1879) married J.D. Clifton; Tony (ca.1882) married Mamie Wooten; Florance (ca.1883) married Francis H. Clark; and Edith (ca.1886) married Henry J. Wilkes. Nothing is known about the son, John, other than his birth year and that he was born in Georgia.

Samuel and Sarah's son, Enoch, married Nancy Ann Smith (1852-1942) and moved to Pensacola, Florida around 1880. Their children were William Henry (1872-1959); Sarah Francis (1877-1958) married John William Fowler; Isaac Samuel (1880-1962) married Josephine Tonnage and Nora Sophronia Freeman; Mary E. (1883-1967) married Joseph Robert Grimes; Nancy Ann (1886-1943) married ? Hart; John Daniel (1888-1965); and Ellen Jane (1892-1963) married Herbert Archie Mayhair. Many of the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have settled in Santa Rosa, Escambia and Bay counties, as well as other areas of the Florida panhandle.

Samuel and Sarah's daughter, Francis Lucinda, married Wilie A. Kent (1839-before 1910) and remained in Calhoun County. She and Wilie both died sometime prior to 1910, exact date and reason are unknown. Their children are Samuel William (ca.1874); Sophronia (ca.1876); Lucinda V. (1886-1938) married George C. Flowers and ? Rogers; Wiley S. (1893); and Martha J. (ca.1895). After Francis and Wilie's death the children all lived with the oldest son, Samuel William, in Cowarts, Houston, Alabama.

Samuel and Sarah's son, Isaac Samuel, married Henrietta Davis Burk (ca.1852-ca.1930) and remained in Calhoun County. Henrietta had a son, John G., Jr., by her marriage to John G. Burk when she married Isaac Samuel. Together, she and Isaac Samuel had six more children: Isaac Henry (1879-1967) married Willie Belle Ledbetter; James M. "Boss" (1881-1962) married Della Ann Armstrong and Lara B.; Rewen Charly (ca.1882-bef. 1900); Minnie (1883-1883); Lewis Ellis (1888-1974) married Lora E. Durden; and Charles Dempsey (1896-1925). Many of the children, great grandchildren and so forth later moved into the Gadsden and Leon County areas, while many still live in the Calhoun, Gulf, Washington and Jackson counties.

Everyone interested in the history of Bay County is invited.

Also featured this year will be the forth annual presentation of First Families of Bay County certificates to those who have proven their ancestor was in the area that became Bay County before 24 April 1913.
